This week was the turn of the red bag.I didn’t photograph all the contents, mainly because I was so keen to get started that I forgot. However it would have been hard to get a good photo of it all together anyway.
There were a lot more things that we had to provide this week. Two scissors : for paper and fabric; pins; cotton and two needles: one for the cotton and a thicker one for some embroidery thread.
There was a sweet treat provided as before: a Blue Ribband bar this week.We had been given two sheets of paper with circle drawn on them and the first task was to cut them out. They told us which piece of fabric to use with each circle.
We were making things called Suffolk puffs or yo-yos.
Here you can see three already made, one with the added gathering thread and the green one yet to be started.
Here is a photograph of starting the gathers on the last one.Once they were all made we had to combine them, using the two buttons, cotton reel and the embroidery thread. To make a little pile for a Christmas tree. We were told we could wrap the cotton reel in yarn or fabric but I decided to use a colouring pencil.I thought that it gave a suitable texture for a trunk. I also added a gold star at the top.I won’t be making any more this week as I don’t have any suitable fabric but it is a fun idea.
I do like how all these things can be made in an hour or two. Since I have to watch the catch-up video, I don’t have to try to finish in the hour but can pause and rewind as I need.
I like the Suffolk puffs, they are so cute. I haven’t seen wooden reels like for many many years.

These cotton reels were craft items. Cotton reels these days are made of plastic here as I suspect they are in Australia. I may have on odd wooden one somewhere myself though. You used to be able to make a wind up tank with one.

I love your little tree. I like making Suffolk puffs too. If you’d like to make more I have Christmas fabric scraps you’d be welcome too.

Thanks for the kind offer but I would probably have made another at the weekend when I had more time, now I have this week to look forward too. I have considered making a teeny tiny one from the scraps left from this one though.

Yes, it is good to try different things. This way I don’t have to go out and buy lots of stuff just to try.

What a cute little tree! I’ve heard of yoyos before but didn’t understand how they were made. It looks much simpler than I imagined

Yes. You need a circle about twice the diameter of the size you are aiming for then just smallish running stitches.
