Mid-Week Makes – Week Three – Lanterns pt 1

I had decided to work from the recorded video this week. The video wasn’t up on Thursday morning, when I looked, so I decided that I would have to try again on Saturday morning. The advantage of following the video in a morning, rather that live in the evening is that I can take my time with photographs and the light is better. It also has the benefit of my feeling that I take things at my leisure and be more relaxed, as I have found, ever since I was a child, that I am not as quick as most people in accomplishing physical tasks.

Like the previous two weeks it turned out to be something that could not be completed in the hour. I suppose you could think that this was better value. In the end I decided that rather than rush to try and finish it on Sunday afternoon, I would be better doing some more later in the week and then showing you next Monday; hence this being only part one.

This week being half-term, there will in fact not be the fourth make until the following week, so that will fit in quite well.

This week the bag contained the following.Various things needed for the projectThat is a paper template to cut out, ten paper cups, ten pieces of fabric, some PVA glue, a string of LED bulbs and battery box and a Breakaway bar.

We had been told that we would need paper and fabric scissors, a brush and a small ramekin. The brush is one of three brushes I had bought when my children were small for using with the powder paint you could buy for children to use.

First of all we cut out the template with the paper scissors.Paper template cut out and fabric
Then we used the template to cut out pieces of fabric. I tried drawing round the template with a pencil but that was hard to see, so in the end I opted for a biro. I think some people used pins, like with a dressmaking pattern.ten pieces of cut out fabric and biroTen shapes duly cut, now was the time to mix the glue. two parts glue to one of water.diluted glue in ramekin with brushThe idea was that we coated the sides of the paper cups with a thin layer of glue, wrapped the fabric around and then added another coat of glue on top.

Of course it wasn’t possible to do anymore until the glue dried.

So I left the pots to dry.ten fabric coated paper cupsAs you can see the fabric does stick out a bit at the bottom. So I will need to trim that off before I complete the project.

Can you imagine what will come next?

More Next Week.
